SOLTAU – The Brains behind the Colour Swatch

Soltau is a contemporary fashion label telling stories through color. Thier ready to wear pieces embody an avant-garde street style for both men and woman. Detail, production and design process has become the forefront of their collections. From earth tones to bright spring tones, their swatches of colours compliment the true mood of the season. We caught up with Matt, founder and creative director at Soltau NYC. Here is our Interview with him discussing recent success, inspiration, summer plans and their next steps for the brand:

SOLTAU

SOLTAU – Salt and River. For all those who haven’t come across your brand. What does ‘Salt and River’ represent and why the name?

Originally, Soltau is the name of a town in Lower Saxony Germany, which was later adopted as a surname by our ancestors. The name Soltau comes from Solt (salt)and au (river).

SOLTAU

How did SOLTAU come about, when did it start?
Unofficially started in 2012 with my brother Brian and cousin Anthony. I was always curious when it came to the arts so I initiated the idea, then the use of the name “Soltau” came about from co-founder Brian. From there we started simple with the graphic tee model, and after failing over and over we were then years later were able to create full collections of various items. It’s taken a lot of time and effort to get to this point but there is still a long way to go for sure.

Simplicity seems to be a crucial factor in your designs. Do you believe in ‘Less is more’?
Definitely! Simple is how I like to dress, so that’s exactly how I wanted Soltau to be.

Colour pallets are a real visual focal point of your brand. How and why do they play such a big factor in your collections?
When it comes to design, order and structure are very crucial to me. Before the release of our SS16 Collection, I wanted to strategically set ourselves apart from the rest, and that’s how I came up with the colour palette per each collection.
The colour palettes set the tone for each collection but are also an integral part of our brand image now.

Re-cap & Future Plans

SOLTAU

How has the summer planned out for you this year?
This summer we hit a few milestones for the brand, we created our first cut & sew garments and we had an international artist wear and post up our clothes – along with setting up shop at multiple creative events in NYC. We didn’t travel much this year, however we’ve got big plans for Art Basel Miami this year.

The Fall/Winter 2016 Misguided collection seemed to be a huge success with JBALVIN copping some of your merch! Are we in for a treat for this A/W season?
Hell yea! That was a very surreal moment for us.
Moving forward we are diving straight into more cut & sew production this time around. Keeping it simple and cohesive with an all around cozy athleisure feel.

The Sage Kimono has caused some attention, what made you include it in your recent collection?
The original idea was to create an eye popping yet simple staple piece and we feel we did just that. Very solid in construction and design for our first ever cut & sew piece I must say… but we took a lot of notes on how to improve our approach for next time.

SOLTAU

Is fashion evolving on the streets of NYC?
All the time, with street fashion in the forefront. Utility accessories like shoulder bags and belts, also athleisure wear like track suits and cropped trousers are most notable.

SOLTAU

What inspires you to create such detailed and creative pieces for the collection?
The industry standard for quality has gone up… damn near everyone’s using some of the best materials on the market. This has inspired us to always push to stay ahead of the curve with innovative pieces with detail being a very important part of the process.

SOLTAU

Does culture play a big part in a brand such as SOLTAU?
Culture influences a lot of what we do, so much so that we have a radio show in the works that will be a direct representation of our world and what we’re into. In general, we stay current with the wave of culture and react appropriately. It shows in our overall brand image and everything in between.
“Soltau is here and we have come to disrupt the current state of fashion.” – Soltau
